LEDAP as a member of the Supporting Advancement of Gender Equality (SAGE) Coalition is advocating for policy and legal reforms to increase women’s representation in politics. The project is supported by the National Democratic Institute (NDI) through the US Agency for International Development (USAID). As part of the project’s activities.
LEDAP has published a well-researched report which identifies the barriers in laws and policies (1999 Constitution, the Electoral Act, the Gender and Equal Opportunities Bill, National Gender Policy, and the INEC Gender Policy) inhibiting women participating in politics. Statistics have shown that since 1999 when Nigeria transitioned from military to democratic rule, women are yet to occupy up to 50% of the available elective and appointive positions in Nigeria. SAGE targets not less than 35% quota for Nigerian women with LEDAP as the NGO component championing legal advocacy at the parliamentary level and other stakeholders’ level.
