LEDAP DEMANDS JUSTICE FOR ANITA AKAPSON
The Legal Defence and Assistance Project-LEDAP extends its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of late Ms. Anita Akapson, and urge them to be strong in this trying time.
The unwarranted killing of Ms. Akapson by an officer of the Police Force is condemnable and highly unacceptable. It is even more worrisome that this sad incident is coming just few months after another police officer shot and killed Ms. Linda Angela Igwetu, a serving NYSC member, for no just cause.
It has become increasingly alarming how police officers, who ought to protect and safeguard the lives and rights of citizens, kill citizens at will. It must be noted that, the Nigerian Police Force has in several cases been indicted for gross violations of Human Rights, with nothing being seen to be done about it, by the authorities.
We therefore call on the Inspector General of Police, the Police Service Commission and the Attorney General of the Federation to ensure that all the officers, not just the officer that fired the gun, but all those in the car that trailed, intercepted and blocked the vehicle driven by Late Ms. Akapson, are investigated and prosecuted publicly, so that justice is not only done, but seen to be done.
As an organization committed to the protection and promotion of Human Rights, we shall use every legal means to ensure that those involved in the murders of these two innocent citizens are brought to book.
